Free Software to Help Avoid Grammatical Errors In Your Copy

No matter how diligent a writer may be with their spelling and grammar, it is still possible to miss errors. While most document creation programs such as Word or Google Docs include a basic spelling and grammar checking function, they fall short of other better software in this area.

If the creation and delivery of grammatically correct content free of errors are important to you, trying out some of the following free editing tools can help you on your way.

From social media posts to blogs, emails and more, these programs can help speed up the process of proofing your work and ensuring you make a great impression with your writing.

Top 5 Free Grammar Software Options

1.   Grammarly

Offering a free browser extension, Grammarly makes it easy to check your text for both grammatical and spelling errors.

Suggestions for grammatical corrections will be underlined in blue while spelling errors will be underlined in red. Simply hover over the text to see the suggestion and click to resolve. You can even set your preferred language for your audience for more accurate suggestions.

Available as a free version with basic grammar and spelling support or a paid subscription for more in-depth support, Grammarly is among the leading choices for editing software.

2.   Ginger

Also available as a browser add-on, Ginger offers basic proofreading covering the most common grammar rules in English as well as highlighting any spelling errors, misuse of irregular verbs/adverbs and wordy sentences.

Ginger offers a good base for proofreading but has limited features on the free software. To access other language settings (up to 40+ translations) you will need to upgrade to the paid version which will also support sentence rephrasing for optimal grammatical accuracy.

3.   LanguageTool

Similar in appearance to Grammarly, LanguageTool also offers all the same basic features including grammar and spell-check functions via a browser add-on. It does however go a step further in that you can access multilingual editing for German, Spanish French and Portuguese via the paid version.

While the basic plan is free, it may not be well suited to those preparing lengthy documents as it will only check 10,000 characters for free per text.

4.   Zoho Writer

A dynamic editing tool, Zoho Writer has some great inclusions and features that are offered entirely for free! Zoho not only proofs your writing for grammatical issues but will also assess readability, highlight run-on sentences, check your spelling, and make suggestions for clarity.

The downside is that it is not available as a browser extension, so you will need to write your content within their word processor.

5.   Hemingway Editor

While not expressly a grammar tool, Hemingway Editor is a free tool that supports proper grammar use by reviewing active voice, readability, sentence clarity and more. It does not check for spelling errors.

Hemingway Editor is entirely free and best used alongside other tools that also review spelling.

The Alternative

Short on time to edit your work or simply prefer not to wrangle with various grammar software? You may also like to consider the use of a professional copywriting company.

An obvious step up from free grammar software, professional proofreaders offer a more tailored approach that takes into account the purpose of your writing, your audience and more. All things an AI cannot offer.

No matter your preferences, implementing measures to correct grammatical errors is just as vital as checking for spelling mistakes. Your writing, whether a business report, shareholder report, blog, email and more all reflect on your business and your approach to your role.

Be sure to make the best possible impression, and find your ideal grammar and editing solution today!
