A Quick Guide to the Different Types of Social Media Influencers

As of 2021, more than seven in 10 Americans use social media to reach one another. For companies and startup brands, platforms like Instagram and TikTok are becoming incredibly versatile places to get in touch with people.

This is why there’s such a big investment in influencers, as they’re the experts on spreading the word on the world’s most popular social media platforms. But are there different types of social media influencers? What are those types?

That’s what we’re here to look at today. Read on to find out more about the different types of social media influencers and what they do.

Social Media Influencer Types

So what is a social media influencer anyway? Social media influencers are those who have a reputation for having knowledge and expertise on a specific topic or part of their respective platforms.

They specialize in making posts about certain topics, niches, and themes. Through this, they obtain a large group of engaged and enthusiastic followers who value that influencer’s views.

Where influencers fall into the marketing industry is that they can market specific products. You can categorize them partially based on their follower counts, or the types of niches they occupy.

Nano to Mega Influencers

One way to categorize influencers actually doesn’t have to do much with the content they produce, but rather their overall following. You can divide influencers up partly by their follower count.

Anywhere between 1,000 to 10,000 followers are known as nano influencers. They’re often great for reaching super-niche audiences. Micro-influencers are in the 10,000 to 100k range. They usually have more brand experience.

Macro influencers have between 100k and a million followers, while mega influencers are in the 1 million-plus range. These influencers are often used for big-budget campaigns marketing larger products.

Niche Bloggers/Vloggers

You might want to tap into a niche subject area, in which case you need to seek out bloggers or vloggers already in that niche. They already have content tailored toward those topics, making it that much easier.

Subject Matter Experts

Doctors or nurses who are social media-savvy often fall into this category. These influencers have a lot of knowledge on larger topics and have the technological know-how to get your brand or message to their followers.

Celebrities

Of course, celebrities are often incredibly versatile influencers. Many homegrown TikTok users are becoming celebrities in and of themselves.

These people have plenty of influence over their audience, making them prime candidates to advertise a product or brand. They also have connections to other companies and potential partners.

Other Influencers

There are plenty of other categories for influencers, especially if we base it off follower counts and things like Instagram’s verification stickers. There are famous writers and photographers who count as influencers.

If you’re looking to gain a following of your own and become an influencer, there’s no better time than now. Becoming a TikTok influencer just requires a few key steps.
